Experience Quantum Physics #Dresden Science Night

Date & Facts

26 Jun 2026
05:00 pm – 11:45 pm

Summary

Once a year, Dresden turns into a vibrant science festival — a place where curiosity meets innovation and research meets society. At this year’s Dresden Science Night, the Würzburg–Dresden Cluster of Excellence ctd.qmat – Complexity, Topology and Dynamics in Quantum Matter — invites visitors on a quantum tour packed with moments of discovery. Five program highlights will make our cutting-edge research visible, audible, playable, and open to discussion. Quantum physics can be fun!

What Does the Future Sound Like? Quantum Sounds with Konrad Kuechenmeister

When: 5.30–6.15pm

Where: On the grass behind the lecture hall building, Bergstrasse 64, Dresden

Dresden’s multi-instrumentalist Konrad Kuechenmeister transforms sounds from topological materials research into live rhythms and layered soundscapes. Using a looper, he creates music in real time and makes the quantum world audible. At the start of the performance, visitors will learn how much quantum physics is hidden in his sounds. Science meets music, and research becomes sound.

Curious? Take a listen

Kitty Q Gaming Lounge – Mobile Game all about Quantum Physics

When: 5pm – midnight

Where: On the grass behind the lecture hall building, Bergstrasse 64, Dresden

The award-winning Kitty Q app takes players on a playful journey through the quantum world, with more than 20 puzzles to solve. Downloaded over 600,000 times, the game fascinates children, teenagers, and adults alike. App designer Philipp Stollenmayer will be there in person, and iPads will be available to borrow. Solve all the puzzles to win a glow-in-the-dark keychain!

RETHINKING PHYSICS: A Century of Quantum Mechanics — Time for a Female Perspective!

When: 5–11pm

Where: Hermann-Krone-Bau, Nöthnitzer Strasse 61, Dresden

The exhibition RETHINKING PHYSICS presents accomplished and aspiring women researchers in quantum physics. They share their enthusiasm for science, their achievements, and their goals— and champion a vision of physics free from stereotypes and social expectations. So far, only 2.2 percent of Nobel Prizes in Physics have been awarded to women — a reflection of history. The project manager will be there in person and looks forward to talking with visitors.

Mist Rings in the Air: Experience Quantum Physics with the Donut Cannon

When: 5pm – midnight

Where: On the grass behind the lecture hall building, Bergstrasse 64, Dresden

Visitors can try out the donut cannon themselves and send rings of mist swirling through the air. The donut shape – known in mathematics as a torus – plays an important role in quantum physics and even appears in the ctd.qmat logo. Electron waves on a torus can be used to theoretically describe the interior of quantum materials. The donut cannon turns this abstract idea into a fun, hands-on experience.

Science under the Sign of the Donut – Cluster of Excellence ctd.qmat

When: 5–11pm

Where: Hermann-Krone-Bau, Nöthnitzer Strasse 61, Dresden

Can you comb a donut without creating a swirl? How many holes does a cup have? Four interactive exhibits invite visitors to unlock some of the secrets of quantum physics. Come and explore current quantum research – and talk to the scientists behind it.

We look forward to a night full of quantum physics!
