A world-class team of around 300 scientists at ctd.qmat investigates next-generation quantum materials. In 2019, 25 principal investigators laid the foundation for the Cluster of Excellence and have since guided it into its second funding period.

This core scientific team is supported by a broad community of researchers and technical experts. Together with the Administrative Office, they ensure the highest standards of research and collaboration.

Principal Investigators

The 27 Principal Investigators laid the groundwork for ctd.qmat. Since then, additional researchers — including professors appointed by ctd.qmat — have joined as Principal Investigators. These full members form the core of ctd.qmat's scientific and administrative structure.
Associate Members

Associate Members

Associate Members conduct research in ctd.qmat's fields and are employed at institutions directly affiliated with it. Together with External Members, they support the Principal Investigators in pursuing their research projects.
External Members

External Members

External Members are not based at institutions directly participating in ctd.qmat, but maintain close scientific ties with its research work. Alongside the Associate Members, they contribute to and support the Principal Investigators' research programs.
Scientific Advisory Board

Scientific Advisory Board

The Scientific Advisory Board consists of six internationally recognized experts working in ctd.qmat's research areas. Members must not be affiliated with any institution formally participating in ctd.qmat. They are appointed by the university leadership in Würzburg and Dresden, based on nominations from the Steering Committee. The Scientific Advisory Board advises on strategic decisions and recruitment, recommends directions for ctd.qmat's development, and provides expert assessments.
Steering Committee

Steering Committee

The Steering Committee manages the affairs of ctd.qmat and is responsible for its scientific strategy and structural development. It consists of the two Spokespersons and up to eight additional members elected by the General Assembly from among the Principal Investigators. In addition, two representatives of early-career researchers — selected by the Quantum Matter Academy — sit on the Steering Committee.
Administrative Office

Administrative Office

ctd.qmat is supported by an Administrative Office with local teams at JMU Würzburg and TU Dresden. Its managers are nominated by the Spokespersons. The Administrative Office oversees core administrative tasks — including finance, human resources, and event coordination — and supports early-career development initiatives, DEI measures, and communications.
