Altermagnetism Networkshop
Date & Facts
11 Dec 2025 – 12 Feb 2026
The event will take place in the Graduate School Würzburg (Beatrice-Edgell-Weg 21, 97074 Würzburg) on the Campus Hubland Nord.
We would also like to advertise Jeroen's talk in the Würzburg "ToCoTronics" colloquium already on Wednesday Dec 10 4pm.
Summary
Altermagnets have recently emerged as a new class of magnetic materials that challenge and extend our conventional understanding of magnetism. Unlike traditional ferromagnets or antiferromagnets, they exhibit a distinct interplay of crystal and magnetic symmetries that gives rise to unconventional spin splittings without finite net magnetization, making them highly attractive for both fundamental studies of quantum matter and prospective spintronic applications.
Within ct.qmat, altermagnets offer a promising, unifying focus for the prolongation proposal by naturally combining expertise in materials synthesis, theoretical modeling, and advanced spectroscopic techniques, while closely aligning with the DFG Priority Programme “Beyond the S‑Wave Magnetism Paradigm” (SPP 2558). Many ct.qmat groups are already actively working on different aspects of altermagnetism, underscoring both the breadth of expertise and the potential for strong synergies. We therefore propose a compact, semi‑closed network workshop in Würzburg to bring these efforts together, foster in‑depth discussions, and jointly develop strategies for coordinated research and FlexFund proposals in this emerging field.
